Historical Style Examples

Every era and locale created wondrous ceiling systems that reflected their artistic tastes. We hope in the following pages to give you a sampling of these plaster ornamental historical ceilings.

You will see that each ceiling type has a distinct character and feel:

Greek

Greek ceiling systems (also Greco Roman) incorporate elements from the Architectural Orders, most specifically the Ionic and Corinthian. Elements include the use of the acanthus leaf, palmettes (palmettos), lambs tongue (tongue and dart), loose vines and flowers, beads, egg and tongue, egg and dart, etc. (1104B.C. ~ 146B.C.)

Gothic

Gothic tracery ceiling systems (also Old English ceilings) are overlain with serpentine panel moldings creating patterns that repeat across the ceiling. Gothic ceilings include motifs of leaves within and around the created patterns. Usually the leaves and profile of the molding are thick and exaggerated in appearance. (15th century)

Renaissance

Renaissance ceiling systems are a revival of the Greco-Roman traditions, usually with a refining of the elements. Renaissance ceilings include figures, putti or cherubs, and lines of leaves with florets. (15th century)

Baronial

Baronial ceiling systems (also Northern Renaissance) are usually seen with lightly to heavily ornamental geometric patterns. Elements in these ceilings include grape, ivy and other flowing vines. (15th century)

Louis

Louis ceiling systems (also Rococo, Louis XV) are a “decadent” form of the Renaissance ceiling style. The elements are usually vines and leaves, but are rendered in greater detail and flourish. Panel moldings that run the perimeter of the Louis ceilings will be delicate in profile and often include ornamentation along the length. Curved leaves or ribbon cuttings are the norm. (17th century)

Elizabethan

Elizabethan ceiling systems (also Later English Renaissance) use refined profile paneling laid out in geometric or serpentine patterns. The interiors of the patterns are often ornamented with bouquets, urns, wildlife, pastoral scenes, coats of arms, etc. (18th century)

Adam

Adam ceiling systems (refers to ceilings designed by brothers Robert and James Adam) are another example of Classical Revival in the 18th Century. Expansive use of repeating patterns of acanthus leaves, palmettos, rosettes, urns, etc. are used to create elaborate ceiling ornamentation. The execution of the Adam ceiling is usually more refined than previously seen in the older styles, and the elements are more delicately shaped and formed. A contemporary of the Adam ceiling style is the Jacobean ceiling. (18th century)

Empire

Empire ceiling systems (begun in France in the reign of Napoleon I, hence the name) are a classic revival of Greek ceiling ornamentation but without the flourish that the Louis style contains. Empire ceilings have a great use of the palmette, guilloche, egg and tongue, and acanthus leaf. (late 18th century)

Colonial

Colonial ceiling systems are the early American use of the Greek style. Lines of leaves with florets and rows of beads are used to create patterns across the ceiling. (1725 ~1775)

Art Nouveau

Art Nouveau ceiling systems are highly stylized Greek ceiling systems. The same use of acanthus leaves and other elements are common to the earlier style, but more highly stylized in its execution. Patterns are more pristine, almost whimsical in appearance. The general thickness of the elements is thinner and with less undercut, rising gracefully from the surface of the ceiling itself. (early 20th century)
