Crown Mouldings


In both classical and contemporary settings crown mouldings enhance the architecture of a room. All cornices, crowns and cove mouldings are used to create visually appealing connections between walls and ceilings, but crown moldings add their own architectural imprint to the room by the use of elaborate ornamentation. There are many different classifications of ornamentation but the standards are “egg-n-dart”, “dentil”, “lamb’s tongue”, “brackets” and many different leaf variations. Each embellishment provides a different feel to the room and connotes a different connection with history and form. Many crowns stick to the traditional combination of embellishments, while other play with tradition by combining embellishments that historically were never together, and other crown moldings have “modern” embellishments that have no historical connotation. Choosing and Installation Tips: Crown molding projections should be based on the width and length of the room so that they do not remove too much of the ceiling. Crowns are installed using the “screw-and-glue” method on the strike-offs. To install you must line up the embellishments so at each joint the embellishments match. Cut each piece so that, when touching the embellishments are aligned. Install on the wall and patch for a seamless look. This type of cutting results in more waste than profile only pieces, especially if your application has many corners.
